Cricket for Me?

" He played outstanding, hit 16 fours"
These were the first lines I heard about cricket. Its been 21 years be still this memory is fresh in my mind. My father was discussion to one of my relatives regarding the World Cup match between Indian and Kenya in 1996. He was discussing about Sachin's great inning.

Two days later I was listening live commentary. the match was between India and Pakistan. Its been 38 overs of the Pakistan's inning who were chasing then. Eventually Pakistan lost the match. During discussion with my father I got to know that Jadeja hit four sixes in the same match. 10 years later I got to know that he smashed Waqar Unus in the same match. It was exciting and I listened the commendatory of the first semifinal but only last 3 overs in which Australia won. In the second semifinal I did listen the entire second inning of India's humiliating defeat. Four year later I got to know that that was the match which defined Vinod Kambali's cricket career. I had little interest in the world cup final but heard in news that Sri Lanka won the contest.

My journey to the cricket begun with emotional touch. In beginning only India's matches were the matter of interest. In the same year the Independence cup made me cricket's die hard fan. India won the Independence cup. But before the Independence Cup India toured England to lose a Test Seriese. The English tour produced two of the most favorite cricketers, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Before that I was the fan of Mohammad Azaharuddin because my  father was. Saurav Ganguly had become the only cricketing interest during the time. I liked him more than Sachin, Azahar and everyone else. He satisfied my interest with outstanding performance in the beginning of  his career. In next 3 years India lost multiple series and it resulted in humiliating departure of Sachin Tenduler from captaincy. Although there were few glories, India's performance in Sahara Cup in Toronto and in Sharjaha. But few sad moments which I still remember were associated with India's contest with Srilanka. Jaisurya and Roshan Mahanama broken record for the highest partnership and made India a clue less team. In between Azahar struggled with his offsetting career and in 2000 just before the Match Fixing scandal he played memorable cricket.

The 1999 world cup I remember because of the Saurav Ganguly and world cup Semi Final. Saurav Ganguly played an outstanding inning of 183 against Srilanka and I still remember that. After 2000 I felt weakening of emotional touch with cricket. But during the same time I created a photobook of cricketers which is sill at my home. Now, my emotions with cricket were not only limited to India only but it became global and hence the cricketing Icons multiplied.

In the part 2 I will explain the story after 2000, which I consider a second phase of my cricketing interest which became global.
